Treatment and Prevention

The best way to prevent oral cancer is to:

  • quit or avoid smoking
  • avoid excessive alcohol consumption
  • see your dentist on a regular basis (i.e., yearly)
  • eat a well balanced diet
  • limit your sun exposure

Treatment for oral and lip cancers depends on how much the cancer has spread. Usual treatments include radiation, surgery and chemotherapy, either separately or in combination. The need for surgery depends on where the cancer is and the size of the tumor. In some cases, reconstructive plastic surgery may be recommended after surgery.
